Mary Baker Eddy: Her Spiritual Footsteps
Published in Paperback by Pasadena Pr (The Bookmark) (June, 1985)
Author: G. Carpenter
Average review score:

"The time for thinkers has come..." Mary Baker Eddy
This is the most helpful and enlightening book for the serious student of Christian Science. It was written as the result of first hand experience in Mrs. Eddy's household from one who had a deep understanding of the science of Christian Science. It does not take the reader into personal opinions about the church, just gives helpful insights into how Mrs. Eddy lived and thought and practised the religion she discovered.

Mastering machine code on your ZX81
Published in Unknown Binding by Reston Pub. Co. ()
Author: Toni Baker
Average review score:

Easy Machine code
The ZX81 was the first computer I ever owned and I still think was the most fun to use. It was ...affordable for someone who wasn't really sure that computers were all that great of a thing, it was small and it was super easy to use. In those days (the early 80's.) there was very little in the home computer market that was as easy to obtain as a ZX81 (TS1000) that taught us BASIC; most of us who learned to write games in BASIC knew that this little machine had one MONSTER drawback... it was unbelievably slow!
Then along came the book: Mastering machine code on your ZX81. If there ever was such a well written book to make the transition from BASIC to Z80 Machine code for the absolute beginer (and the faint hearted...), I have yet to find one after all these years. The book is written for the absolute novice and assumes that you have no knowledge of Machine code or Assembly language. The first chapter introduces you to Hexidecimal and gives you a very simple program for entering machine code. The next few chapters walk you through some of the very basic Z80 codes and compairs them always with BASIC. The further along you go in the book, the more you learn and grasp as everything is explained to you in plain english with LOTS of examples walking you all the way through each chapter. You are shown where machine code can be stored in your computer, how jumps and calls work; how to load registers and how to add or subtract from them; how to print to the screen and how to read the keyboard. There are chapters in the book that let you enter parts of a CHECKERS program that runs through most of the book and explains and discusses each part of the program in various chapters as you enter and test your program, and why they work.
There is a Music program and a SPIRAL game, a program that plays LIFE and there's even a BREAKOUT game that you can play. All are thouroghly explained and suggestions are made as to how you can modify and enhance the program. You are given a few homework assignments and plenty of hints; the book has a great appendix and the whole book is layed out to be practicle and very user friendly with the main goal of the book,to have fun while learning something new. -I found on some chapters that going over them a few more times gave me a deeper grasp of the underlying concepts (just re-reading the last paragraph again); and yet other parts were easier than I thought it would ever be.

I found this book was exactly the stepping stone I need then (1982) and was the best refresher this past month (11/01) when I reciently got the book again after all these years. Toni Baker is the champ when it comes to making the complicated (and intricate) seem easy and plain to those of us who are not rocket scientist, just tinkerer's and common folk who are willin' to learn, if you just give us the right dose and make it fun along the way.

Merton and Sufism: The Untold Story
Published in Paperback by Fons Vitae (01 January, 2000)
Authors: Gray Henry, Robert Baker, and Rob Baker
Average review score:

Christian mind at its Best!
This is a well written book about a deeply spiritual man. This book is about a monk spiritual journey. A journey that took him to many alien ideas and cultures.

In his quest and search for the Real, he refused to disregard other revealed religions and what they can offer in a complete sense of spirituality.

His search led him to contact Muslims as well as Muslims saints and other well known and respected writers about the subject of Islam and Sufism in particular.

This book reads like story which makes it easy to read. At the end, the reader will be able to find out the influence that Islam and Sufism had on this excellent mind. And how it helped him to become a better Christian.

I have enjoyed this book very much. I would recommend this book for all.

A great book on prayer and healing
I've read this book several times and it has a special place in my heart as one of the best books out there on prayer and spiritual healing.

It is a compilation of Mrs. Eddy's writings and includes "Christian Healing," which is a MUST READ for anyone interested in prayers that heal and restore.

Also included in "Misc. Writings" is "Ways that are vain" which is one of the best explanations of evil that I've ever seen in print. If you liked C. S. Lewis' "Screwtape Letters" you'll also appreciate Mrs. Eddy's article "Ways that are vain."

If you just want to know more about Mary Baker Eddy, this book really gives an inside look at the woman's life and work. "Retrospection and Introspection" (in Misc. Writings) is Mrs. Eddy's autobiography and is a great read.

This is a THICK book - well over 1,000 pages and it is stuffed full of practical wisdom, good information and specific instruction on how to pray more effectively.

I highly recommend this book, as well as Eddy's more well known book "Science & Health, with key to the Scriptures."

Missing Pieces: How to Investigate Ghosts, Ufos, Psychics, & Other Mysteries
Published in Hardcover by Prometheus Books (September, 1992)
Authors: Joe Nickell and Robert Baker
Average review score:

The most intelligent book on the paranormal out there.
This really is invaluable to anyone interested in researching paranormal claims. Full of humor, references and suggestions, it's like a gigantic handbook, or operations manual for the paranormally inclined. Told from a skeptical point of view, the insight and commentary is enlightening. A must-have in the library of anyone who has an interest in all aspects of the supernatural.

Mouse'S Halloween
Published in Library Binding by Millbrook Press (September, 1997)
Author: Alan Baker
Average review score:

3-year old son loves this book!
We couldn't put this book down! The illustrations are excellent...there are hidden woodfairies to find on each page. Lots of Halloween ghosts and goblins, witches and creatures. Not scary, in fact, teaches you that things may not always be what they seem...or are they. Great book for Halloween fanatics, like my son.

Multislice CT: A Practical Guide
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (15 January, 2001)
Authors: B. Marincek, P. R. Rose, M. Reiser, and M. E. Baker
Average review score:

Eventually a practical guide to multislice CT!
To the best of my knowledge, this is the first book dedicated to this recently-introduced technology. Until now, multislice CT was a rather difficult field because even in the literature the studies are quite rare and often hard to understand for a physician. Multislice CT - a practical guide represents a great tool to understand the basics of multislice technology as well as all its major clinical applications. Very good job!

P.S. A gold medal to the last chapter which is about optimization of virtual colonoscopy in a phantom model.

Mythology and You
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Donna Rosenberg and Sorelle Baker
Average review score:

This book provides real-life connections to mythology.
As a pre-service teacher, I am always looking for good ideas for lesson plans. This book is wonderful. It provides the historical context of the myth, presents pre- and post-reading questions, and offers links to today's world. The myths are brilliantly retold in modern language that is easy to understand. The book is thought-provoking, and it challenges the idea that mythology is a thing of the past. Mythology and You is very well composed, and offers a unique perspective on an old tradition.
